If you're heading west out of Beijing, make sure you make a stop off in Datong to go and see these caves. They're a set of several caves, some as old as the 6th century, carved into a cliff-face a short bus ride outside Datong.
The caves are full of carvings of buddha figures etc. and some are painted in bright colours. They are truly a spectacular sight. It is staggering to think of the amount of effort that must have been involved in carving out these intricate designs and statues from a blank cliff face.
