The Mont Ventoux Oct 03, 2014
This is probably the reason why you are here in Malaucene. The legendary mountain with the nickname “Giant of the Provence“ is a popular destination for bikers and hikers and a myth to Tour de France – fans. The view from Mont Ventoux is marvellous, the lack of vegetation close to the summit gives it the air of a lunar landscape with forests in the background.

Mont Ventoux is around 15 km away from Malaucène “as the crow flies”, according to the road signs it is 21 km by road, many hiking paths are even longer. The summit is at a height of 1912 metres with a telecommunication tower and a disused weather station on its top. A handful of shops (souvenirs, snacks, a restaurant and a bike shop) caters for your needs.

Due to its exposed nature, ascending Mont Ventoux is a subject to weather conditions The hiking paths are not recommended under wet conditions and you can expect precipitation on two of three days. The road to/from Malaucene is partly closed between April and December due to snow (access from Sault is still possible however). Tips on how to get from Malaucene to Mont Ventoux can be found under the transportation section.
