Cleveland's Historic District Reviews
Wonderful Historic District May 05, 2008
Begun back in 1837 this small town in the south-eastern corner of Tennessee has long been proud of its cleanliness, shade trees, beauty and wealth. Covering an area of less than 25 square miles, and with a population of only about 40,000 this is the county seat of Bradley County. They have always promoted themselves as a great place to live and even in their city’s welcome center the brochure quotes from the Cleveland Weekly Herald from April 4, 1902 “If you want to locate in the prettiest, the wealthiest, the cleanest, the healthiest, the most progressive and the most cultured town in the south, come to Cleveland. Cleveland has more pretty streets, more shade trees, more churches, more good schools, more sober representatives and more pretty women than any town of its size, north or south.” This brochure listed historic buildings and homes in the historic district of town and described many of them and their historic relevance. There are so many wonderfully maintained homes and buildings with very nice landscaping in this small community it was very difficult to tell which were old and which were new.
