alternate hub via budget carrier Jul 24, 2012
Located within the Clark Freeport Zone is Clark International Airport or aka Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.

During President Fidel V. Ramos’ administration, former Clark Air Force base at Angeles City in Pampanga was suggested to be developed as Philippines’ new gateway. It was named after president Diosdado Macapagal hailed from the province of Pampanga, who was the Philippine President in the 60s.

The terminal has been improved to handle one million passengers per year. It is mostly served by budget carriers AirAsia (Malaysia), AirAsia/Zest (Philippines), Cebu Pacific/Tiger Air (Philippines), Seair (Philippines), JinAir (South Korea), Dragonair (Hong Long), Asiana (South Korea). This airport is a hub to Macau, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Incheon, South Korea. The airport is clean, safe and facilities are at par with modern airport standards.

Departure has 12 check-in counters for departure at the lower deck and has four immigration counters and to pay terminal fees. The terminal has four gates, two with connecting air-bridge on the upper deck and two on the lower deck for bus transport to the airplane. The terminal has the basic design of duty-free, souvenir shops and fast foods eateries. WIFI is available but slow and weak. Signal is strong at the check-in counters to avail of the services and grow weaker as one proceeds to the boarding lounge.

Arrival procedures are quick as well even if two aircrafts arrive at the same time because it has two conveyor belts and ample space for all passengers to line up to look for their arriving luggage. After claiming your luggage, proceed to immigration and exit the terminal. When my wife and I used this airport to fly to Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia and came from Bangkok with Cebu Pacific night flight, departure and arrival procedures were smooth and hassle free. However, when departing via this airport; it is still advisable to arrive at standard two hours before the flight.

Clark International Airport is about 80 kilometers or 50 miles northwest of Manila, and easily reached by bus routes from Metro Manila. Therefore, if a traveler is coming from the North, like Baguio City instead of catching a flight at the airports in Manila; Clark International is an excellent option.
