Clara Barton National Historic Site Jul 11, 2014
The home of Clara Barton for the last fifteen years of her life and first headquarters of the American Red Cross, this colossal house was built for her in 1891 by some real estate developers hoping to use her fame to promote the neighboring Glen Echo community. She got the house for free, the developers were later forced to sell off their investments in Glen Echo, and both are now run by the National Park Service.

Clara Barton was a fascinating woman who led relief efforts for wounded soldiers in the American Civil War, traveled throughout Europe, served as a volunteer nurse for the German army in the Franco-Prussian War and founded the American chapter of the Red Cross. When she was offered a home in Glen Echo, she demanded something much larger with additional bedrooms for Red Cross staff and storage space for the fledgling organization. What she got was a mansion that served as Red Cross headquarters until a permanent home was established in Washington.

Free tours are offered on the hour that last roughly 45 minutes. There are a few parking spots right in front of the house, though a much larger parking lot for Glen Echo Park is steps away. Photography is permitted inside. An interesting place to check out if you like old houses and have already seen the more famous sites in the Washington area.
