City of York, Walls Nov 19, 2017
York City Walls are 3.4 kilometres long, are well preserved and the longest Medieval wall in England. It is believed 2.5 million people walk along all or part of it, each year. A complete circuit takes about 2 hours, depending on how long you take viewing places along the wall. There are 45 small towers. There are 4 main Gates [ Bars ], Bootham Bar, Monkgate Bar, Micklegate Bar and Walmgate Bar. Walmgate Bar has its barbican gate, also a cafe. Monkgate and Micklegate Bars have small museums. There are two minor gates at Fishergate and Nunnery Lane. Modern traffic times have seen the need for arches in some places though the wall. In springtime the mounds are a splash of yellow with daffodils. A walk on the walls is FREE.
