City of Rocks Apr 13, 2008
This is a very unique spot in the middle of the Chihuahuan desert of New Mexico; actually there are only 6 places on earth that have this type of rock features. And back in 1951 the state decided to make this into a State Park for camping and hiking. There are just over 50 campsites, 10 with electricity and water, and the visitor’s center has modern restrooms and even showers. Lots of different birds are found here and an array of creatures ranging from Coyotes down to many spiders, including Tarantulas and Scorpions. Several kinds of snakes including at least three varieties of rattlesnakes make their homes here too, so caution should be advised, especially around the boulders and rocks. They claim the high average temperature in July is only about 86 degrees, probably due to the elevation above 5,000 feet. There are several trails around this one square-mile park and the highlight of features here is that at night the stargazing is fabulous! Absolutely no light pollution!

We were there during the day when we could see the rocks and formations and found that a drive through the area was the extent of our visit.

It is not in Deming, thought it is pretty close to it. City of Rocks will be an experience I will never forget! It is basicly what looks like a "city of rocks" out in the middle of nowhere. There are HUGE boulders, little rocks and tiny pebbles. It is also a camp ground. Almost all of the rocks are climbable, and you are free to climb any rock you want to! There is also an observation point, and a bike or hike trail. Plus, at the end of the day, you can go to the observation point, and watch the sunset behind the mountains. I know it doesnt sound like much, but it is AMAZING!! The sky seems to explode with color! But dont take my word for it, check it out yourself! I will have more pictures on soon.
This is only a small part of the C…
