Comfortable but with ladders! Mar 14, 2008
City Hotel Amsterdam is located just a short walk away from the main city attractions area. It is a 2* hotel with basic facilities. Room rates include a continental breakfast. I stayed in a single room which was situated at the top of the hotel. The room was adequate and quite spacious for a city hotel. The room had a single bed and a small table with chair with one interior window and a small skylight-style window.

The showeroom was small but adequate for a long weekend visit.

Unique Qualities: As is quite traditional in Amsterdam, this hotel is in a tall, narrow building and this could well present some challenges to guests as rooms situated anything above the first floor are accessed by stairs that are more like ladders! They are very steep so it's worth getting ready for the day before breakfast and taking everything down with you so that you can head out without returning to your room.

Address: Prins Hendrikkade 130, Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, 1011 AP, The Netherlands

Directions: Turn left out of Centraal Station and head down Prins Hendrikkade, you will find the hotel after a sharp bend in the road.

We paid 215EU for a twin room in February for three nights. Not quite hostel cheap but very cheap for a hotel. We had an en-suite room which did cost extra but my days of sharing a toilet with strangers in the morning are over.

The hotel is not quite "a few metres from the train station" as the hotels own review puts it but it is about 800 metres and very easy to find from the map.

It is basic but the beds were clean, the shower worked and the toilet flushed. If that is all you are looking for and are not going to spend any time in the room this hotel is fine. It is a few minutes walk from the red light district, close to Dam Square and all major tram routes.

I never made it to breakfast - The Dam is that kind of city, but my husband did and said it was nice but wha do men know!?
