The city has no state-funded history museum. The city history museum is run by Ostchem Corporation (formerly Azot Corporation). Although it is officially called People’s Museum of the Factory Labor Glory, it is, in fact, the City History Museum since the history of the city os closely connected with the chemical enterprise from which the city sprang.

The museum is located on the third floor of the office building that stands to the right of Mendeleyev bust on your way to the main entrance to the enterprise.

The memorial plaque hanging to the right of the entrance to the office building reads, "The construction of Azot Corporation began in September 1933. The first products were manufactured on January 1, 1951. The working people from all the Soviet Union republics took part in the construction and putting into operation of the shops of the factory."

The museum has several halls dedicated to different periods of the city history that is closely connected with the foundation, construction and development of the Nitrogen Corporation (“Azot” in Ukrainian), a huge and unique chemical company in Ukraine.

The city history museum holds regular folk arts exhibitions where you can see handicrafts made by the families of the enterprise employees: embroidery, modelling, woodcarving, etc. Those exhibitions are held in the conference hall that is next door to the museum itself. I was privileged to see such an exhibition.

During your visit to the City History Museum located at Azot Corporation you can also admire the exhibition of traditional handicrafts that is displayed in the conference hall of the enterprise.

The museum chief Olga told me a story about this tradition and showed me around. The city history museum holds traditional folk arts exhibitions every year. The exhibition lasts for a month. It includes the handicrafts made by the families of the enterprise employees: embroidery, modelling, woodcarving, etc.

They also organize a contest for the best work of art and hold it in different nominations encouraging people's creativity and resourcefulness.

During your visit to the City History Museum located at Azot Corporation you can also see a unique war memorial in the hall dedicated to the Second World War inside the museum: a huge wall with bas-relief and poetic inscriptions occupying all its area. There is a natural size figure of a war time Soviet soldier wearing an authentic uniform, except for his boots. As Olga, the museum guide, explained to me, the army boots did not last long, and the museum employees had to provide the figure with new boots.

There are the names of 157 Soviet soldiers and officers who fell in the battle for liberation of Syeverodonetsk in January-February 1943.

The inscriptions on the white plaques, located to the left and to the right of bas-reliefs, read, "May the flame of love and gratitude to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War eternally burn in our hearts"

"Let us remember everybody by name, that is what the living need, not the dead."

"You and I used to stand on a mound and in front of us we saw a multi-pipe steamer, but not a single pipe had fumes.

They say the air of the Donets Basin was so clear, like never before… Only you and I could not endure breathing that air. "
