Citadel of Namur Apr 16, 2016
A brief shot of the history about the Citadel of Namur.

The Citadel of Namur has held a strategic position for a very long time, as not always. It was an important command center in the middle ages, though it has been sad that people lived at the place 6000bc. Between the 15th an 18th centuries it was coveted and besieged by al the great powers in Europe. It has been a military stationary since 1830, after the Belgium revolution. Since 1893 part of the Citadel was gifted to the people of Wallonia by King Leopald II and since 1975 The whole complex was inherited by the people of Belgium.

The Citadel of Namur is located on at an 100 meter high hill above the city Namur. It is one of the biggest castle's of Europe. Visiting the site on tour own is free. The gates close at a certain time which is indicated while you enter.

We started at the underground passages and that guided us to the visiting center Terra Nova. Though we didn't visit the visiting center. Instead we walked around the Castle and city wall for a while. (there is also a small d-tour trough some forest part which is an unhardened pad). The cite is enormous and will entertain for multiple hours if not the whole day!

Visiting the visiting centre, Terra Nova, is free which holds an exhibition which will show you the 2000 years of military history in Europe. You can buy tickets here which will give you excess to a couple of things. You will get a guided tour around the underground passages and you can also hop along the tourist train.

Ticket price

€ 11 for adults and €8 for everyone between 6 and 18. Children under 6 are free.
