Nature and history combine here Nov 13, 2010
I found it difficult to find a website that gives reasonable coverage to both the Cirque de Baume and the village of Baume-Messieurs with its old abbey. The one I have given has both but I hope you will want to search fuller ones on each.

A cirque is a geographical formation where mountains stand round a valley in the shape of a horseshoe. Here the rock is limestone and there are cave and waterfall features as well.

The village of Baume-Messieurs (There is another caled Baume-Dames!) lies below the cirque and has an old abey open to the public via the church. It is not certain when the present building was erected but to me the combination of rounded arches and pointed windows would suggest round around the 12th century.
