Cincinnati (Queen City, City of Seven Hills, Porkopolis) exists at the nexus of north and south in the United States. Beneath a conservative veneer (typical of a more southern city in the US) a lively, active city emerges with much in the way of activities: from professional sports teams (Reds and Bengals), an active music scene (music geeks check out woxy.lala.com), and other nightlife, historical, and outdoor activities galore. The Cincy/NKy (Northern Kentucky) area has plenty of activities to suit your fancy. One of theses the Underground Railroad Freedom Center recalls Cincinnati's place straddling that North/South divide from the United States past. Pay a visit to Kings Island and/or the beach, north of town for amusement park adventures during the hot/hazy summers.

Why "Porkopolis"? In its early days, Cincinnati was a major processing facility of pigs/pork in the US. Today that history is celebrated with the Flying Pig Marathon held every May.

A strong German heritage is very evident in Cincy. Cincinnati even has a licenced Hofbrauhaus from Munich and celebrates Oktoberfest yearly.

Also be sure to try "Cincinnati-style Chili" at some point during your stay. Skyline and Gold Star are the best known brands but try to find one of the smaller local restaurants for a true taste. Make it a three-way and you'll remember Cincinnati for sure.

"WKRP in Cincinnati" used the Cincy skyline in its opening montage and was fictionally set in the city.

Journal entry written Tues., Sept 16 from a Burger King with power and Wi-Fi access... The remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through southwest Ohio on Sunday afternoon (Sept 14).  As I drove up to Dayton in the afternoon, I dodged broken tree limbs on the road, one traffic signal that had been ripped from the line, and just missed by about 10 minutes an entire tree falling on a car on Wimington Pike.  Pulling into my parents neighborhood there was one tree blown over in someone's yard...

Thus concludes the trip and the blog back home in Ohio.  A few additions may come shortly and will be annotated here so one will know where to look.  If nothing is entered here the update was typographical in nature. 2/11 Day 5 in Torres del Paine (11/24) - new photo standing in the wind at the overlook Glacier Trekking at Cerro Torre (11/27) - new series of photos of my crossing Rio FitzRoy on the tyrolean traverse. Happy to share a unique adventure thanks to a brave friend who is an American citizen living in Dubai. The sole regret of the expedition was that my wife did not accompany me.  I thoroughly appreciated her reservations, stemming both from current tensions between the US and Muslim culture as well as the notoriety the Arab culture has for shabby treatment of women.    My gender provided a critical comfort level, but there were two additional reasons contributing to...

Anticipating the upcoming adventure entails a wide array of emotions. I am perpetually attempting to prepare myself mentally for the challenges and joys that are ahead of me. Regardless of my many attempts, I still believe I am in a dream. This doesn't seem real to me. It just can't be, the young lady from Kennett, Missouri, is traveling to Eastern territories. Despite my attempts at familiarizing myself with Korean culture I know it is impossible to understand something simply from written w...
