A nice stroll, but not a must Jun 30, 2013
Cimetière de Montmartre is located, like the name indicates, in the Montmartre area. It´s a short walk from Place de Clichy and Blanche metro station. The cemetery covers a ground of 11 hectares and 47 people work there to maintain it.

With more than 20.000 graves it´s a small “Père-Lachaise”. It´s been the resting place for many artistic personalities since the beginning of the 19th century. The composer Hector Berlioz and Jacques Offenbach are buried there. The latter wrote the famous cancan tune. Other celebrities are La Goulue (stage name of Louise Weber), the high-kicking danseuse who was the cancan´s first star performer and Toulouse-Lautrec´s model, the painter Edgar Degas, writer Alexander Dumas Fils, German poet Heinrich Heine and Russian dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.

There are a couple of information boards and maps of the cemetery by the main gate, but all is in French. The maps are only by the entrance and not inside the cemetery, so I recommend you to pick up a free printed map at the porters office. Don´t get confused. The map on the board and the printed map have totally different reference numbers to which person is buried where. Stick to one of them! Even though you have a map, it´s difficult to find some of the tombs. They are not all situated along the path, but in between other graves. I had picked out a few names I wanted to find. It turned into quite a treasure hunt. Most of the tombs are well taken care of, but some are unfortunately abandoned. Some of the abandoned once look a bit spooky. You can easily get the Michael Jackson Thriller feeling.

There are some famous persons buried at Cimetière de Montmartre, but not like at Cemetière Père-Lachaise. It was a nice stroll through the cemetery, but it´s not a must.
