Churchill Vacation Guide

Churchill, Manitoba is located on the south shore of Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River in the province of Manitoba. This community of less than 1000 full-time residents is known as the polar bear capital of the world and its population explodes during the fall tourist season. People come from all across the world to ride the tundra buggies and see polar bears up close and personal. In addition to the bears, some also take boat tours to see the pods of migrating beluga wahales as they prepare to head further north. Churchill has a number of hotels and a few restaurants to help provide for the tourists. If you do want to see the bears, book very early as spaces fill up even a year in advance!

In addition to the tourism industry, Churchill also serves as a staging area for barge shipments of goods to northern communities in Nunavut. There is a train system from Thompson that is used to ship the supplies to Churchill and can also be taken by passengers.

Churchill has quite a history as it was the home of a military base for many years and even earlier was close to the Prince of Whales Fort that served as a major fortification for the Hudson Bay Company during the fur trade era in the 1700's.

I work as a flight atendant for Calm Air in Manitoba & Nunavut Canada. You can only imagine how freaking cold the weather gets up there- I havnt seen the Churchill polar bears( but will include some friends photos) but got to play in "Miss Piggy" a airplane reckage from the 70's( and the pilots did survive by the way) I get to go up to these place 2 -5 times a month for a period of 2-3 days so I make the best of it as the airfare is not cheap to reach the true north. It truely is world class.
