Church of St. John in the Wilderness Nainital Reviews
Tranquillity in the wilderness Feb 09, 2012
Of the many attractions that Nainital holds, one must see attraction relating to Heritage and British culture, is the church situated in the northern hilltop of Nainital very adjacent to the High Court Of Uttarkhand.
Called the church of St.John in the Wilderness it was built in 1844 in Neo Gothic style by the Anglicans next to the administrative quarters of the Army which now houses the Courts. Amidst pine and deodhar trees in a thickly wooded area on the hilltop this beautiful church is now fighting neglect and decay.Beautiful stained glass windows and panels is now covered with dust. The huge wooden main door of the church happens to be locked and the tall belfry, aisles are wings slowly falling into dirt and disuse. The church is big and still commands the awe and respect of yesteryears. It is said that Jim Corbett worshipped here during his tenure in the British army and was a great benefactor to this Church.
Going around the church I felt tranquillity and calm in the air, filled with the smell and whisper of the pine and deodhar trees among the woods.
This place is a must see place for those who value peace and tranquil travels. It certainly also will not disappoint lovers of heritage and architecture.
