Great little chapel for the dukes! Apr 16, 2011
The Palazzo Ducal has to be one of the most famous sights in Mantua, and served as the residence for the Gonzagas. Around the sixteenth century, they decided to build a chapel next door to the palace - hence the church of Santa Barbara! Apart from being the ruling family’s chapel, the place was also the sight for Mantua’s more spectacular religious celebrations (marked by the ornate organ inside). The church is a rather beautifully decorated building and is worth the visit. Inside there are the remains of a few of the Gonzaga dukes and their relatives as well. If you are in Mantua, this would be a key church visit.
