Chumpon Pinnacle Dive Site Koh Tao Reviews
Shark Spotting Aug 01, 2006
Chumpon Pinnacle is about 40 mins by boat from Koh Tao and is a great place to scuba dive. Depth ranges from 14m to 32m so it can be visited by those holding open water or advanced scuba certifications.
As a scuba instructor working here, I get to see this site quite often yet I still get excited when I go. Its always a lively dive with lots to see. On some occasions my open water students will finish their course here and its perfect for advnaced training.
This huge pinnacle is carpeted with anemones and their resident fish. A great school of Bat Fish will meet you at the bottom of the descent line. You can see great barracuda and their smaller yellow tailed cousins. Several large grouper make this their home too. Tiny yellow box fish hide in the coral too.
However most people are attacted to this site for the chance to see sharks. A resident population stalk the reef at the deeper depths and there is still quite some discussion as to if they are large reef sharks or juvenile bull sharks. Come and see for yourself. The gentle giant which is the whaleshark is also a seasonal visitor to the pinnacle. Whalesharks are seen in their greatest numbers in March April and May and then again Sept - Dec. This is, I think, the only place on earth where you can watch these majestic creatures whilst scuba diving. Amazing....
