Clean and nice heritage hotel Jun 17, 2014
Chulia Heritage Hotel is a 3 star hotel. It looks very grand from outside and it got the homey feel with beautiful plants around. The lobby is right few steps from the entrance and there are rooms at the same floor. The lobby doesn't not have air - conditioner so you may feel a bit warm if you spend a little longer at the lobby.

The room that i stayed is two queen-size bed with attached bathroom at RM220 ++. It is a full white, rather small room with just enough space for everything you want to do and it is fully equipped with everything you need. The only flaw of the room is the design of the toilet whereby the shower tap is fix and cannot be removed above your head. So if you do not want to wash your hair, please remember to wear a shower cap.

Although i just stayed right beside the receptionist (ground floor) but there is not much noise which i am quite happy with. Limited parking lots are available right in front of the hotel but it is based on first come first serve basis.

It worth a try for a short trip getaway!

There is free Wifi provided.

Chulia Heritage Hotel Penang Apr 11, 2013
The staff is extremely helpful and kind. This is what I like most about the hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Bathrooms are also kept clean. Georgetown is an old, quaint town so don't expect high-tech state of the art amenities in this hostel.

Location is good. Convenience stores abound and the area. Just try to be careful at night since there might several questionable looking people around the block.

Overall, I would most def stay in the hotel again.

Chulia Heritage Hotel Mar 26, 2012

Beautifully located in the middle of the heritage area, this hotel is not by the roadside, but slightly behind the main street. The main signboard is not up yet, but it can be spotted if you look into the lanes. Since it's not situated by the roadside, it feels more homey and peaceful.

Grand, White, Modern are the 3 words I can come up with. Although named 'Heritage', it does have a modern look from the outside.

White, Clean, Quiet and Comfy. The best thing is when you climb up the stairs. It has wooden flooring (original from the past except for the repaints) and shoes are not allowed. The upper floor is very spacious with very minimal decoration apart from a full length mirror in the middle.

ROOM (the one I stayed in)

Small but comfortable. Comes with a nice white cupboard with hangers and even 2 pairs of indoor slippers. I'm surprised that they actually provide hair dryer too! Bed was a bit hard, but was not an issue for me. I was alone so I had 1 queen bed and 4 pillows all to myself (2 hard and 2 soft pillows). They have 2 small side tables and 2 little cups. Hot water can be obtained outside at the common area. Mineral water is upon request. Only one socket in the room for charging, but you can always ask for a multi-socket from the Reception Desk. There is a flat screen tv on top of the door! A weird position and you're expected to watch while laying on the bed only. Hahaha! The room's air-conditioned. There is also a window in the room for some fresh air, but there's no view what-so-ever.

Only the rooms on the ground floor have bathrooms attached. For those staying on the first floor, there are 7 common bathrooms+toilet. During my stay, there was literally 6 toilets available as one was under repair. However, there was not even once that I need to queue to use the toilet. So don't worry that you'll pee in your pants... if there's really a need to go, there are also common toilets on the ground floor. The beauty of the common bathroom is also that you and your friends/family members can use the toilets at the same time and don't really have to wait long for one another. Toilets come with a 2in1 shampoo/body shampoo, water heater, toilet rolls. Towels are provided in the room.

Since the whole place is nothing but white, the place looks very clean, bright and decent. During 'peak' times, the toilets will be slightly wet as expected. But it's considered clean especially for a budget hotel like this.

Since this is a heritage building (second one to be certified a heritage hotel after Yeng Keng Hotel which is located just next door), you should be expecting old flooring, old walls, old doors... The walls are really thin so please be considerate and speak softly. Guests are advised not to run and no shoes are allowed on the upper floor as the wooden flooring would create too much noise. Also, you will notice the flooring in the rooms have been chipped off, but that's acceptable of course... otherwise it will not be called 'heritage'! The gap between the door and the floor is about 1.5cm and varies among the rooms. Therefore, even if lights are switched off in the rooms, you still get some lights from the hall. This place gives me a very homey feeling and i tend to walk around without my shoes on, so it's really comfortable.

Not provided. You don't need it since you can get food everywhere you go in Penang.

There's a number of hawker stalls within walking distance. A 24-hour 7-eleven is about 2 minutes walk away. There's a Car Rental service in about few seconds walk from the entrance, and there are also nearby cafes and laundry service just around the corner.

If you're driving, worry not, as there's an open air car park right in front of the hotel, guarded by a security guard at night. I had a bicycle with me and was allowed to keep it inside the hotel behind the Reception Desk. How nice... :) Busses pass the main street quite frequently so it's easy to hop on a bus too. Otherwise, you just need to walk about 10 minutes to the main bus station at Komtar (a shopping mall).

Just at the side of the entrance, there is a little area with comfortable sofa and a coffee table for some chill-out time. Relax and get some fresh air (there's also a fan there), or treat it as a place to meet your visitors if any. Maybe having a tv+dvd player there will be more interesting. But it's fine just the way it is.

The Reception Desk provides maps and bus routes guides, so feel free to ask them.

There is a security guard at night who is very friendly. If you need to go somewhere nearby at night (i.e 7-eleven), you can always request for a personal bodyguard. :)

There is wifi in the room as well and connection is great.

Please refer to my pictures. But it's really cheap considering all the things it has to offer!

Just about anyone, except probably for infants who are expected to cry/scream at night. This may disturb other guests since the place is fairly quiet and peaceful. For those who are traveling in a group but prefer to have separate rooms can also consider this place.

Saving the best for last. For everything I mentioned above, I give them very good, if not excellent ratings! As for their service, I would like to rate them 'the very tip of the top'! Front desk was nothing but perfect! Very friendly, very helpful, very knowledgeable, very polite and never without a smile. They know the guests' names by heart and never fail to greet everyone who's going in or out. A simple "how was your day?" and "have you had your dinner?" and "rest well" really does make a difference! I bugged one of the hotelier there with background stories of the hotel and the lifestyles of the Penangites, and there was no hesitation at all to give me facts as well as personal views. As I observed, the relationship between the staff members were also very close and warm. It was nice seeing them working together and joking among themselves. The atmosphere was indeed very pleasant. The person whom I've corresponded the most is a young Chinese guy whose name is Kevin. He's been a great help and if you happen to be served by him, lucky you! If you're being served by the others, you're just as lucky. Hahahahah!

At the moment, I can't think of any.
