Chuds no dud Nov 25, 2017
Asked the clerk at the admission desk for Spiegel Grove if he could recommend a spot for lunch and he directed me here. Chud’s is only a five block walk away from Rutherford Hayes’ estate, and seems to be the ‘everything’ stop for Fremont. The restaurant is a separate section inside, but Chud’s features a small grocery store with what looks to be a full service delicatessen. Although it is not very large, Chud’s is way more comprehensive than any convenience store.

The diner is basic, but well above what I expected for the back end of a mini-grocery. A complete bar sits in the center and the menu offers steaks and seafood entrées, an honest full service restaurant. Being in attendance for lunch, I opted for a Turkey Philly, topped off with sautéed mushrooms (as an add-on for an extra charge). The sandwich was quite tasty, especially as it was served on sourdough bread. No side dishes accompanied the sandwich, which was fine by me because there were already sufficient calories – I easily resisted the waitress prodding to complement my order with a side of fries.

Service, by the way, was expedient and friendly. Nothing fancy, but actually perfect for the atmosphere. Nobody will ever make a special trip to Fremont for a meal at Chud’s, but a pleasant surprise to stumble across in a small town.
