Cambridge: City of Dreams & for Dreamers! Apr 07, 2009
Instead of visiting Oxford by bus, you can also visit Cambridge which (I think) is much nicer to get a feel of the older university-days.
From London, take the train (again later than the busiest time of day) to Ely (check my other review) and stop at Cambridge. Just a short bus-ride to the city-centre and there you are!
Cambridge being one of the oldest university-towns, really gives the visitor the feeling he or she is pulled in the city's history. Already on the market square you can see St. Margaret's (from which you by the way have a great view on Christ's College & Church). The church itself is worth a visit for its serenity. Walking further you will see the old colleges. Each one can be visited (you'll have to pay a small fee) and it is really worth your money.
Tip: visit the Wren Library (free entrance between noon and 2 o'clock: go early! there will be a long waiting line when the weather's fine), in the Wren Library you can see various British literary masterpieces varying from Old-English manuscripts to the manuscript of Winnie the Pooh!
another tip: go punting on the river Cam. You can try it yourself, but you can also let someone else do the hard work :)
Cambridge is really worth visiting, not only for the old colleges, but also for the city's nice surroundings.
