He's got the whole world in his hands... Sep 14, 2009
The Christo Rei reserve sits out on a peninsular on the Eastern end of the Dili Harbour. The massive statue of Christ stands high above the sea, arms spread, welcoming all comers entering the Strait of Wetar as they sail between Timor Leste and Atauro Island.

The statue can be seen from most parts of Dili area and has always been a focal point for those looking for somewhere to go for a day. Many Kiwis stationed here in Dili drive to the area and run up and down the steps leading to the statue as part of their fitness regime.

The area is undergoing massive renovation at the moment with the road, the carpark, steps and the statue itself all at various stages of being refreshed.

The road out past Portuguese Beach winds close to the cliffs as waves crash on the rocks just below. The carpark is a massive expanse, indicating the importance of the location to the Government and the future of Timor Leste.

There is no entry fee and no time limit to wander around the site. With all the areas under construction we headed straight to the steps where the beginning is marked by one of 13 scenes of Christs torment. The first is his condemnation by Pilate.

Not being a religious man myself I wandered up the path and simply enjoyed the "art" of the small scenes. The steps are small but many which makes for a easy but slow climb that should be manageable for all ages. Just below the statue itself their is a large courtyard with a sound-shell showing the final scene, Jesus resurrected. It is apparent the area has been built for public services.

Up the final flights of steps (these being as steep as typical flights) Christ's statue stands atop the globe. The statue is huge but there is plenty of room up here to admire the craftmanship and enjoy the 360 degree views out to sea, the island or back to Dili.
