Christmas Tree Lane in Fresno, California Dec 28, 2013
Christmas Tree Lane celebrated its 90th anniversary this year. It began in 1920 with the decoration of a single deodar cedar tree in memory of a child who died in an accident the year before. Other residents joined the family of that little boy’s annual tradition in the years that followed. And by 1931, this tradition became known as Christmas Tree Lane (CTL) -- now a two-mile stretch of holiday displays on Van Ness Boulevard between Shields and Shaw Avenues attracts more than 100,000 people every year! CTL is set among twinkling towering trees and well manicured lawns in one of Fresno's most desirable neighborhoods. Young and old come from near and far for the over the top Christmas displays. Local radio station plays holiday music specific to CTL and you can listen while driving through the lane.

On the opening night of Christmas Tree Lane, millions of lights are turned on at 6:00 p.m. and remain lit until 10:00 p.m. Over 100 homes and 300 trees are decorated. The free event is sponsored by the Fig Garden Homeowners Association.

Opening day is always on the 2nd day and ends on the 28th of December, every year. Sadly, the lane went dark two times --in 1941 (wartime restrictions and in 1973 (energy crisis). Through the years, lane coordinators have improved energy efficiency with better wiring, cutting power requirements by nearly 50 percent over the past years.

Mainly, this is a drive thru attraction. Drivers access Christmas Tree Lane from Shields Avenue and drive north to Shaw Blvd. The drive thru is open from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Sunday to Thursday but from Friday and Saturday it is open from 6 to 11 p.m. During these times, traffic on Van Ness is northbound only. There are also designated days for Walk Nights (Dec 2 and Dec 10) and during these nights, vehicles are not allowed.

The decorations are from too elaborate to very simple but all charming anyhow. Take note: A house on the right hand side, towards the end of the lane always goes above and beyond with their spectacular light display that includes a castle, a train with trucks and even LED fireworks. Bravo to the owners because it's always a crowd pleaser.

Fresno's Christmas Tree Lane is an experience I enjoy with my children, we sip hot cocoa while we drive through the lane or just (recently) I and my husband time alone for a walk on our wedding anniversary! Exploring this site via car or walking, the charm is always there!
