Christchurch, gateway to the South Island of NZ Aug 30, 2014
Christchurch is a nice size city of approx 400k people

It is the gateway to the South Island and from Christchurch you can go North to Hanmer and Nelson, West to the West Coast, or South down to Dunedin.

Queenstown and Fiordland is down South but you can reach it by going inland (South) or a longer route via the West Coast, or the scenic Inland route via Tekapo

Most do a circular route so that you see both the West Coast and the glaciers and then Queenstown and perhaps to Milford Sound if you have time. The inland lakes of Wanaka and Tekapo are also a must.

Minimum time is at least a week to do the Southern section. Two weeks will allow you to see all if the South Island but there will be a lot of travel.

The roads are windy and slow driving when you are in the mountains stuck behind a Campervan.

Christchurch city is still under repair from the earthquake and is still receiving earthquakes almost daily, but at least they are now mainly under mag 3 and you don't feel them.

It is going to be another 10 years before the city rebuilds as they are still trying to determine what the new city will look like.

Everyone has their own point of view.

I would not put off visiting Christchurch, it is still an interesting city with lots to do. It is mainly the business city centre and some suburbs towards the sea that were affected. Roads throughout the city are still in a mess though as new utilities are run.
