The first place to vist when staying in Rio May 16, 2012
It doesn't matter if you're religious or not, this is the first place to visit when your in Rio. We had actually signed up for a day-long tour and this was the first stop on our trip. Our guide recommended that we go early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowd.

We were in a sedan with a guy from Paris. So, although we were officially on a tour, it was just me, my friend, the guys from Paris, and the driver! We got to go up farther than the buses did cause the roads get steep and when I say steep, you can't imagine it until you are there. There are other routes (including a tram that slides up to the top), so be sure to research your options.

The view is magnificent and you can really take in the scenery and snap a hundred photos while you're up there. There are strategic places to stand in order to be sure you get Christ the Redeemer in the background of your photo. You will just be amazed at how massive he is in size when you get to the top.

Unless you have some sort of agenda, take your time when you get there and then, when you come off the mountain and you are on the beach or wandering around, just look up and remember that you were way up there!

I got soooo hot when I was up there! To the point we had to run for cover after a while, it was exhausting! I also did the hang glide that landed on the beach, the views were incredible :-)

The most famous statue in the world- Christ the Redeemer! Jun 19, 2011
It is one thing to see the Christ statue on tv and think how amazing it is but to actually be there and see it in person takes your breath away. This amazing statue gives a 360 degree panoramic view over the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro. From many areas of the city and its famous suburbs Christ is nestled high above keeping a watchful eye over this magnificent landscape.

During my 6 weeks in Rio i visited the statue twice and if i went back i would do it all again. Take your time at the top. Sit down at one of the two cafes and bask in the sunshine while admiring the clouds passing over head which look like there on a collision course with christ. Also enjoy the hanggliders and helicopters that pass by overhead. All in all this would have to be one of the most spectacular sights in the world :)

Tips for travellers:

* Check the weather forecast before going out to the statue. If there is high cloud about it is more than likely the statue will be in the clouds and you will not see much once up there.

* Check google maps/directions to find a bus that goes directly to the base of the statue. Google maps will tell you the number of the bus. One way costs about 2.60 reals which is about $1.50 dollar. Extremely cheap. Taxi's out there from Copa or Ipanema could cost in excess of 20-30 dollars.

*Avoid the line ups. Make sure you go early. Preferably leave your hotel well before 10am. By 10am the line up is already quite large. There is just 1 tram that goes up to the statue and sometimes the waiting time will be 2hrs however the men outside the street at the bottom of the mountain will offer to take you up in maxi cabs. It works out a tiny bit more expensive but it beats waiting 2hrs for a tram. They take the road up which is a magnificant journey in itself. Although if you get car sick maybe take the tram as it is a windy road and the drivers like to max it out to the top!

*There is generally an english speaking local at the ticket booth at the bottom to welcome international guests, provide assistance and can help you with catching the right bus back to your destination.

Great view of Rio Mar 27, 2011
Christ the redeemer is a statue of Christ on a high mountain in Rio. I'm not a christian but the view of the city is marvelous! While standing on this mountain I realized that Rio was a place I could get used to and maybe even move to.

Maybe I will someday but we'll see. ;-) But don't miss it when you're in Rio!

CHRIST THE REDEEMER (CRISTO REDENTOR) Nov 16, 2009
You’ve probably already seen it in a postcard but once you get there the view will be stamped in your mind for a lifetime. This is the first touristy place you want to visit to have a clear picture of Rio’s layout. The spot offers a 360° view of the city. Take the map with you and figure it all out! If possible, avoid going on weekends because the place is packed! The best way to get there is by a small red tram. The 20 minute ride will take you up through the Tijuca forest. It’s filled with jack fruit trees. The statue covered in a mosaic of soapstone stands 30 meters / 100 feet high, about the same size as the Statue of Liberty. There is no way to go up the monu-ment. No need. It lies at the peak of Corcovado Moun-tain (2,330 feet / 710 meters) that splits the city in two: north and south regions. Following the Art Deco style, the statue was built by a Brazilian engineer and a French sculptor from 1926 to 1931. The money was raised from donations.

Price: R$ 45.00 Discount with an HI card.

Opened daily from 08:30/18:30

How to get there: From Downtown: get BUS 180 or BUS 184, at Av. Rio Branco /// From Glória, Flamengo: get BUS 180 or 184, at Av. Augusto Severo /// From Botafogo: get BUS 583 at Rua São Clemente; or BUS 584 at Praia de Botafogo /// From Copacabana:get BUS 583 at Av. N. S. de Copacabana; or BUS 584 at Barata Ribeiro /// From Ipanema, Leblon: get BUS 583 or 584, at Rua Visconde de Pirajá and Av. Ataulfo de Paiva ///

Rio's Post Card. You must go up there to see the Statue and to have a view from the whole Rio de Janeiro city. The view is wonderful. You should go while visiting Rio de Janeiro.

We've all seen the picture of the huge statue overlooking the city but it is not until you are up there that you appreciate just how impressive it really is.

Early on a Saturday morning, we took the bus to Cosmo Vehlo (buses in Rio are frequent are so cheap) for R$2 and from there got on the train that takes you up the hill (for R$36) - there are beautiful views but only on one side of the train so get a seat on the RHS.

The ride is about 15 to 20 minutes and pleasant, once there officials directing the masses of people coming and going to once you're there - GOSH - to me, it felt like taking a few steps closer to heaven.

It's breathtaking, the views are inspiring but the massive work; rich with history and culture wraps a feeling of warmth around even the most indifferent of us.

There is not much else up there except a few gift stores and a restaurant but I could have sat there under God's arms all day :)
