The Chopin Museum in Warsaw is a small museum with a rich collection of Chopin memorabilia including hand-written scores, personal letters, portraits, art works and other family souvenirs. The museum is located in a baroque building built at the end of the 16th century which has been used for many purposes through the years - from military barracks, to hospital, to factory. From 1858 to 1939 is was the seat of the Warsaw Academy of Music. It was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII and since 1953 has been the home of the Frederick Chopin Association and Museum.
The Chopin Museum consists of three rooms - one covering the period while he was growing up in Zelazowa Wola (about 60 kms from Warsaw). A second room covers the period when he was in Paris and the third room covers when he was older, with Geroges Sands in Nohant, France, where her mansion was located. The museum staff is particularly friendly and helpful and supply plenty of information in various languages to add to your experience there. We combined this visit with a bus trip to Zelazowa Wola where Chopin was born. I will write about that in another review! Part of the Poland travel blog |
