A modern marvel of a Mongolian forefather. Oct 08, 2014
The Chinggis Khan Statue Complex, containing the massive Equestrian statue, was recently constructed in 2008. It is located on the outskirts of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar, in the Tov Province nearing the Gorkhi-Terelj National park.

The main attraction is an accessible 130 foot statue forged from approximately 250 tons of stainless steel. I was able to walk up the 5 levels. Visitors are able to perch themselves directly above the horse and was impressed by the level of details forged by the welders ranging from the giant Khan himself to the personal effects of his armies. From what my lovely tour-guide told me, the complex is far from completion and will have several buildings surrounding it in the near future. It will almost function as a town center, with many yurts already placed around the complex in a seeming grid-like manner. In the meantime, visitors can enjoy the vast view of the Mongolian steppe. This statue broke the record as being the largest statue of a horse ever constructed.

The interior of the complex consists of a museum pertaining to the historical conquests of the Mongolian empire and the family tree of the Khans, articled with many artifacts from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. There are also a pair of gift shops for the souvenir lovers. There is a bar and luncheonette included on the second floor, not sure about the food and drink quality since I haven't dined there.

Inside an impressively built structure are also smaller impressive structures including a 25 foot tall leather boot made from over 200 cow hides. Everything about the Chinggis Khan Complex is impressive in size.

If you visit Mongolia, then you will want to visit this attraction. Even if you visit no other attractions in the area, this is the one. I will definitely be back in the next couple years to visit again to see how it progresses.
