Chinese New Year parade Hong Kong 2012 Kowloon Reviews
Entertaining and loads of colors Jan 23, 2012
As I was in Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year I had the possibility to watch the Chinese New Year parade Hong Kong 2012. The parade was first held in 1996, and this was therefore the 17th year that the Hong Kong Tourism Board staged the New Year Parade. The streets started to be blocked off already late afternoon.
The parade started at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza near the Ferry Terminal and proceeds along Canton Road, Haiphong Road, Nathan Road and Salisbury Road, and ended at Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers. The participants walked the streets over and over again.
The show starts around 6 am but the more professional teams enter around 8 pm. This year the parade contained of twelve decorated and brightly lit floats, a range of international participants including: themed floats and performers from Thailand, Shaolin kung fu group and an acrobatic troupe from China, a comic band from Italy, a procession that features a giant fish statue from Japan, cultural dance groups from Korea and Moldova, stilt walkers from the Netherlands, a brass band and majorettes from Russia, a carnival group with big props and fantastic costumes from the United Kingdom, cheerleaders and a modern dance group from the USA.
Besides this also traditional dragon and lion dancers, ballerinas, hip-hop and jazz dance troupes, costumed characters with giant props from Hong Kong. The parade was really popular and the streets were filled with enthusiastic people cheering.
