China DIY Travel expertly optimizes your railway itinerary before ordering train tickets Sep 22, 2017
Not having any experience with Chinese booking agencies and requiring 26 Chinese train tickets, we followed the advice in the 8th edition of the Rough Guide and the 15th edition of the Lonely Planet. Rough Guide advised us to check out Travel China Guide, which Rough Guide considers the best for train bookings. Lonely Planet went for China DIY Travel.

From the start, Travel China Guide had the advantage of $5 commission fee of per ticket (that meant total $130 for us) while China DIY Travel asked $10 per ticket (total $260). Soon, China DIY Travel was on par when we discovered their promo code ‘OCTZ’ of $5 per ticket on the seat61 website.

To both booking agencies, we sent our detailed itinerary in time, compiled with the help of the Chinese Railway website (there is a learning curve involved using translation tools, but soon you can give clear instructions and start a meaningful dialog with the booking agencies). Travel China Guide accepted our itinerary without any hesitation and requested money before starting booking the requested train tickets. China DIY Travel started scrutinizing out itinerary and indicating three problems: one with seats and two with the availability of train tickets on some stretches of high-speed lines.

No word of any problem from Travel China Guide. When we confronted Travel China Guide with these problems in our itinerary, they responded surprised with suboptimal and expensive alternatives. The business model of Travel China Guide is simple: accept any request for any train ticket, do not scrutinise the request beforehand, let the customer pay before purchasing the train ticket, tell the customer after paying there is a problem and solve these in a suboptimal and expensive way. That was not good for us and we chose the customer friendly business model of China DIY Travel.

China DIY Travel worked with us on alternatives and solved them better than we expected. We liked their swift communication, payment after purchasing train tickets and their instructions on picking-up the tickets in the railway stations. With foreign travellers in China, they know where things can go wrong and they anticipated with clear instruction on our reservation letters. They even offer telephone assistance when things go wrong, like missing a train.

China DIY Travel gave us an unforgettable train experience on the high-speed railway lines of China. We felt their attention to detail and customer care was essential. Very recommended.
