A Little bit of History Jun 24, 2011
Chimney Rock is interesting due mostly to it's rich historical involvement with the westward expansion during the late 1800s through mid 1900s. A short way down the road is Scottsbluff National Monument, also deeply rooted in history but also offering hiking opportunities.

The visitor center and museum are small but worth the $3 admission. Chimney rock must be viewed from quite a distance, which I found slightly dissapointing (although I realize the reason is to prevent any further damage to the site).

A natural tower May 13, 2010
In the early 1800s early fur traders found this large rock feature and many more followed to use it as a trail marker along the east to west Oregon, California and Mormon trails. Visible for many miles it was said to have been 360 feet tall in those days. It has been shortened by a few lightning strikes over the years and today Is only about 325 feet. The pillar is made up primarily of Brule clay with volcanic ash and Arikaree sandstone. The harder sandstone layers near the top have protected the pillar since it broke away from the retreating cliff line to the south. It was designated a National Historic Site on August 9, 1956. The Visitor Center features museum exhibits and a video about pioneers and the migrations in the West, as well as a gift shop. There is a $3 entry charge for adults. Children with adults are free. On March 1, 2006, The Nebraska State Quarter, released in March 2006 features a covered wagon headed west past Chimney Rock.
miles away it can be seen.
