Chimney Labuan Reviews
The mysterious object on the island Jun 09, 2011
The Chimney of Labuan is an object where no one knows why it was ever build. The exact time of the build is unknown, but it is believed to be between 1847 and 1912, when Labuan was used as a coaling station in the Far East area.
The construction is british, standing over 106 feet high (around 32,5 meters) and more then 23.000 red bricks were used in its construction.
Now, the reasons as to why it was build vary. At first it was thought to be a ventilation shaft, but there was no evidence found of smoke & burning. Other suggestions were that it was part of mansion under construction and a lighthouse.
At the foot of the hill the Chimney is build on, lays a museum about the coaling station era of the island. Both the tower and the museum are free to visit. However, photography inside the museum is not allowed.
Is it worth to visit the Chimney when you're there? Well, if you're happen to do a tour of the island, spent a short time there if you like to know more about the history of the island. If you prefer to do relaxing or other activities, you won't miss it if you don't go.
