Chillingham is a very small place in Northumberland. If you have never heard of it, don't worry - nor had I until just before I went there. probably some have been only for the 'haunted' castle and the magnificent 15th century tomb in the church. I suppose these are worth seeing but to me the main feature of Chlllingham is the herd of white cattle on the castle estate.

They can only be seen on guided tours led by the warden - just as well because they are not only wild but potentially dangerous. They are the sole survivors of cattle that used to roam all over England. They are now, as you would expect, enclosed but they have 365 acres of great parkland to live in.

They retain habits of the wild. The prime bull gets all the cows but he is challenged for the crown every year and at these times a lot of care is needed if you want to be close. The cattle are never visited by vets.
