Great bit of history Apr 27, 2011
Located in the centre of Assisi, the name probably gives you a very strong hint as to its history. The site was once where local residents paid their respects to the ancient Roman goddess Minerva, the deity for wisdom. Part of the original structure is around and intact, though this cannot be seen as far as I am aware. The temple was then left deserted after pagan worship was outlawed. Benedictine monks came and rescued the place in the sixth century, and by the fifteenth century, the visiting Pope Paolo III insisted that the site was restored and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The decoration inside is very nice; I really liked the shade of blue for some reason! It’s a rather cosy set up and very well looked after. If you are in the centre of Assisi, and enjoy your churches, you might want to pop in here!
