Situated towards the end of the town centre, and just inside the town walls, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore is perhaps the most impressive church around, even more so than the town’s main cathedral. Dating from the thirteenth century, the church was given a makeover in the sixteenth century, when Pinturicchio was appointed to fresco up the interior walls. These frescoes are still visible and in remarkably good condition, as there are very few traces of cracks or faded bits. Apart from the frescoes, there isn’t much in the way of highlights. Overall, a very worthy visit for the frescoes alone.
