Crypt frescoes Apr 29, 2011
Situated just outside the town walls, this church is dedicated to San Ponziano, the patron saint of Spoleto. The church dates back to the twelfth century and was constructed in a Romanesque style, but it has definitely been embellished in the succeeding centuries. For example, the frescoes are from the fourteenth or fifteenth century. The crypt however is completely contemporary to the original design. Throughout the church, the frescoes are very nicely maintained and a true pleasure to look through. The crypt definitely has better specimens though, and as it seems so unchanged, it feels as if it still operates as a time warp. This church is well worth the visit in Spoleto.
