Statue with a story and an early Vasari painting May 11, 2011
Situated towards the back of central Arezzo, this church dates from the fourteenth century and the façade was completed during the seventeenth century. Considering the age of the church, I was surprised that it lacked a great collection of medieval frescoes. What it does have however is sn early painting by Vasari, The Deposition, though the lighting could be better for it. The main feature however is the statue of Madonna with Christ above the high altar. The site was once home to a hospital which assisted pilgrims, women and children. In the fifteenth century, the statue that is now above the high altar was in the oratory, and it apparently shed tears. This is why it has pride of place in the church. Overall, this is a nice little visit if you’re in this part of Arezzo.
