Chiemsee is one of the largest lakes in Germany. There are three main islands: Herreninsel, Fraueninsel and Krautinsel (which is only inhabited by cows). Ferries take visitors to and from the islands. Herreninsel is the largest of the islands, where King Ludwig II. built one of several castles. It was intended to be a smaller version of Versailles. Fraueninsel is a smaller island inhabited by a few hundred people. It is pretty much just the small town of Fraueninsel, which is very quaint and easy to explore fully because it is so small. The main attraction here is the convent Kloster Frauenwörth. There are of several restaurants, and the smoked Chiemsee fish seems to be a speciality.

Herrenchiemsee (Men's Island)
The castle on the Men’s Island is one of the biggest tourist attractions in upper Bavaria. In 1873 Ludwig II acquired the island and erected a pompous castle modelled after Versailles. He revered the French Sun-King and created with this castle, a monument to absolute monarchy. It serves less as living quarters, and more as a symbolic spreading of his fame. After his death in 1885 the building was left unfinished.

ChiemseeWe took a day trip out to Chiemsee yesterday. There are two islands there – Herreninsel and Fraueninself (essentially: man island and woman island). Chiemsee is the setting of King Ludwig’s palace (one of them anyway), which he designed to look like Versailles. He ran out of money and never finished it though. His bathtub was the size of a small swimming pool. Also interesting is the fact that he died in the house. He was found in the pool with his physician – who was also...

Located just off the autobahn A8 (Munich - Salzburg) Lake Chiemsee and the surrounding area will no doubt impress you. It's beautiful and fun all year around. You can rent boats in the summer and jump in the always cool lake. Or you just hop on one of the many ships that will take you to either the Fraueninsel or the Herreninsel, or even both if you arrive early enough. These boats leave mainly from Prien am Chiemsee which is a beautiful little town on its own. There's a nice waterpark here w...
