Chicago Theatre Company Reviews
The Chicago Theatre Jan 18, 2010
Built in 1921, this theater opened as the most expensive and elaborate theater in the country at the time with construction costs of $4,000,000. The style is French Baroque. It was the first theatre in the popular Balaban and Katz theatre chain.
The grand lobby was modeled after the Royal Chapel at Versailles and is 5 stories tall. The grand staircase was designed after that of the Paris Opera House.
Interestingly, this is one of the very first things I saw as I exited the L train when heading into the loop. After leaving the train platform and walking down steps to street level, I turned around and saw the sign staring right back at me. It was beautiful!
For $12, visitors may tour the theatre and explore the details on the inside.
