Definitely worth staying at this nice hostel Aug 22, 2012
Located near the campus of DePaul University, the Chicago Getaway Hostel is probably one of the best hostels that I stayed at.

Located about a few blocks from the Fullerton stop on the Red Line, it can be quite a walk, especially if you arrived in town, and holding luggage. Even worse is if the weather is not so nice, especially in the hot, steamy summer. But once you get there, you are in a very nice place.

The hostel is located on quiet street, away from the busy ones with a lot of noise. Also, it is recommended that you do NOT have a car, as parking is nearly impossible to find. Even the hostel feels the same way as well.

You will be given a key card, which you need not only for your room, but also to get into different sections of the hostel. That will be necessary to get to the bathroom, located in a different hallway. Hard to explain, but it’s not hard to get the hang of it. But it can be a pain to remember the card, when carrying things to the bathroom, as you may find yourself going back and forth.

The rooms are nice, with lockers in them. Though it can be a bit cramped, with a bunch of them in one room. Finding electric sockets are hard to find, as they are not near every bunk bed. So you may find yourself recharging things, near someone else’s bed, and in the middle of their things. Do that at your own risk.

The staff are very nice, and answer any questions you may have about the city. There is free internet and printing as well. Bathrooms are okay, but could be better. But I guess it’s hard to stay clean, as it gets messy very easily.

Plus there is a lounge and common room area, where people can hang out, or play pool. And there is a kitchen, for anyone to store and cook their own food.

There is a free breakfast, which is basic. But it’s okay and a good way to start the day.

Occasionally, there is an all-you-can-eat barbecue, which is included during your stay. But this may only happen during the busy seasons, so no guarantees there. But if does, it is a huge bonus, and definitely worth the time, and could save you money.

Overall, the hostel itself is a great place to stay, and at reasonable prices.

Best Hostel Ever! Aug 18, 2011
This was my first experience of using a hostel and other hostels will now have a lot to live up to. This hostel was recommended to me by a native Chicagoer (if that is even a word!) and Travbuddy user '34Chicago23' and after my time there, I thoroughly recommend it also.

The communal areas in the Getaway look more like a 'boutique' hotel than a hostel and the staff were amazingly helpful and cordial at all times.

There is free WIFI access along with a number of computers available for use in the lobby. There is also free continental breakfast, consisting of a choice of fruits, cereals, breads & butter / jelly etc...

They have a large, very clean self-service kitchen, where you can keep food items and make use of the facilities to make meals if you wish. There are free lockers (you need your own locks) and free change of linens / towels.

There are also free weekly BBQ's (which I took advantage of and the food was delicious!) and a free weekly pub crawl. I didn't do the pub crawl but a number of us got free entry to a Blues bar (Kingston Mines) courtesy of Getaway and it was fun.

You can also hire a bike for the day for $15 and either go off by yourself or join in a tour with a guide. There are large common rooms with cable tv in one, piano in another (there are also guitars to use for free) and a pool table in another...

There is no curfew at this hostel, alcohol is allowed but everyone was very sensible, there was no outwardly drunken behaviour within the residence.

I loved this hostel and highly recommend it to others!

Didn't spend too much tie here, but had a nice vibe and good breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful, free wifi and computers with net, in a nice neighbourhood close to the lake.
