Chiba Overview

Chiba is the name used to describe the prefecture neighboring Tokyo to the east as well as the capital city of that region. Most of the region lies on a large peninsula called the Boso Peninsula with Tokyo Bay to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. Chiba city itself is located about 40 km east of Tokyo on the other side of Tokyo Bay, with the east part of the city just at the top of Boso.

Chiba city is part of Tokyo's extended industrial area while the rest of the prefecture is a very important farming region for rice and vegetables. Chiba prefecture is very hilly and mountainous with beaches in the low lying areas. Nokogiri-yama or Nokogiri mountain is a known destination in Chiba with fantastic views of Tokyo Bay. There are many places in Chiba for hiking, beaches (Onjuku for example), castles, farms, and even a popular aquarium (Kamogawa Sea World.) Chiba prefecture itself is not as densely populated and is a popular nature lovers heaven. Narita International Airport is located in Chiba prefecture.
