Chiang Rai is mainly a stopover on the way north, but can also function as a good base for doing some hilltribe trekking in the surrounding area.
The hilltribe museum gives a lot of information on the local hilltribes. Two recommended places for booking trekkings are the museum and the Akha river guesthouse.
The city has some nice temples, for example Wat Ron Khun, a kind of Thai "Sagrada Familia" which is still under construction.

I don't have much to say about Chiang Rai since i was only here two days and I was sick pretty much the entire time. It didn't seem like there was all that much to do here and most backpackers only stay a night on their way to Laos.
