Arrived Chiang Mai, found a nice hotel with hardwood floor a/c and satelite tv for 16 bucks a night. Chaing Mai is a great town with lots going on. We spent a couple of days looking around and eating and then decided to take a cooking course. The course was put on by a couple…

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a month and a half in Thailand for serice work and cultural education. Four other students and I divided our time between learning about NGO work, volunteering at the McKean Leprosy Center sponsored by the Thai-German Leprosy Foundation in Chiang Mai, and exploring the wonderful sites, temples and markets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, and Krabi, as well as numerous remote villages on the northern Thai border during our humanitarian trips.

This was one of my favorite places. I'm not a religious person, but the peacefulness I felt when we were in the temple in Chiang Mai was indescribable. A wonderful trip!

Instead of doing a two or three day trek, which seems very popular around here, I decided for a one day trek where we'd do some hiking to a waterfall for swimming, elephant riding, white water rafting, bamboo rafting and a visit to a couple villages. For 1,000 baht, I wasn't sure what to expect and…

We didn't intend to visit Vientiane, but we are glad we did. Apart frombeing a good base to dissipate the jet-lag, it was also a gentle introduction to Lao. Before adopting the "PDR" monika, and before the USbombed the place to shreds (although that's another story), Laos was aFrench colony. It has…

The night markets are a must as you will here the often repeated phrases "same same but…
