Day 11 – November 3, 2007After an eventful night and dancing till 5 am, we must not have woken up before 2 or 3 in the afternoon. We figured the best thing to do would be to get one of those pesky 2 hour Thai massages. After a good massage, we sought out one of the all too common dent…

Last night was the third night in a row I just couldn't get any sleep. I have no idea why; I've spent plenty of nights in this dorm and have normally slept fine but it's extremely annoying. I'm living on coffee. Despite all that, I had a really good day yesterday. Once I'd finally dragged myself up…

Today was our 1 day trek that we booked yesterday. We had to grab a quick breakfast and check-out of our hotel because we woke up a little late. We decided to move to a new hotel so we had our old hotel hold our bags for the day. After picking up some food at a convenience store, …

We managed to spend a total of 2 weeks in Chiang Mai in the end, and a lot of this involved relaxing, drinking and recovering from various ailments. On our return from trekking, we managed to stay up until 4.30am for the rugby...but the days following were spent sleeping...in order to make up for t…

In the morning, we enjoyed a breakfast of coffee, toast, and a hard-boiled egg. At one of the bamboo huts, Akha women bartered some of their unique handicrafts. I bought one of the wide leather belts which included the two sashes for twenty Baht (80 cents U.S.) The colorful sashes were dec…

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a month and a half in Thailand for serice work and cultural education. Four other students and I divided our time between learning about NGO work, volunteering at the McKean Leprosy Center sponsored by the Thai-German Leprosy Foundation in Chiang Mai, and exploring the wonderful sites, temples and markets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, and Krabi, as well as numerous remote villages on the northern Thai border during our humanitarian trips.

I went to Chiang Mai, Thailand with a friend from Singapore without any expectations at all. I thought it's just like the city of Bangkok. But I was really surprised to learn that there's just so much you can do in Chiang Mai. We spent our first few days roaming around the historic city. …

Arriving back in Chiang Mai from our fantastic weekend break to Pai invoked a mixture of feelings in us. Daft as it sounds it felt like we were coming home, staying at the same hotel, same room, straight into our favourite veggie restaurant for lunch etc. That in turn made us feel as though we'd ne…

I caught a ride to Wat Suan Dok, a temple associated with one of the two Buddhist Universities in the area. This temple offers a chance for people to chat with monk scholars about Buddhism. I was absolutely floored by the poise and intellect of the monks here. I learned mo…

For today there was planned a bike ride around Chiang Mai. It started out a bit cloudy and when we started riding it even rained a tiny little bit. After about 5 minutes it was dry again though. After we crossed some busy highways we got to quiet roads. The first part was pretty flat so there wasn'…
