Mumbai museum! Feb 06, 2013
This museum has to be one of the leading museums in India. It showcases some amazing pieces of art and archaeology; most of this is religious and some of it is as old as the Indus civilisation. The pieces come from all over India, and even some from neighbouring Nepal. There is a natural history section, but this is relatively basic and worth a brief exploration at best!

Although the modern name for this museum is verbose, it was previously known as The Prince of Wales Museum. The change of name was executed a few years back in an effort to “take back” national heritage; the old name understandably holds connotations with the British Empire. However, the old name is still widely used and asking for directions using the new name causes confusion with the locals!

Photography is not allowed inside. They do have toilets which are well-maintained! The decent seating and waiting area on the ground floor is a nice touch, and the whole building is rather handsome. I think that information/audio guides might be available for a fee, but I didn’t opt for such services. The general layout is very good and the information plaques with each exhibit are descriptive enough.

Definitely worth a visit if you are in Mumbai and like museums.
