Chetumal is a fairly good sized town of a little over 130,000 people near the very furthest SE point of Mexico. I discovered it is actually the capital of Quintana Roo, the state on the eastern portion of the Yucatan. It is situated on Chetumal Bay near the mouth of the Rio Hondo river which forms the border between Mexico and Belize.
The city appears to be growing and has a small international airport. There is a free trade zone just across the Rio Hondo on the Belize side.
Bacalar is a town of 5000 people in Quintana Roo about 40km from
Cultural. It lacks by an amazingly beautiful lake, also named Bacalar. The area is part of the Pueblo mágico program
