I loooooved everything about CHETICAMP - its location - The atmosphere - the Acadian Culture - the beautiful sunny day we were there.

Cheticamp is a thriving fishing village on the west coast of Cape Breton Island and the western entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The downtown area overlooks a large Bay.

The population of nearly 4,000 is made up mostly of people of Acadian descent and Cheticamp is the largest Francophone enclave on Cape Breton Island.

Things to do in Cheticamp includes visiting "Les Trois Pignons" and Jean's Gift Shop, both of which display beautiful hooked rugs of which Cheticamp is the Center and well known for.

The locals have a "joie de vivre" - Joy in Living, as the community hosts many concerts, dances and musical events throughout the summer months.

This is why their town motto is "Toujours Chantante" - Always Singing!

The very first thing we saw, when we were driving into Cheticamp was JEAN'S GIFT SHOP. It was early, 9:00 a.m. and the lady that works at the gift shop was just arriving. We followed her in and what I saw just blew me away - hundreds of beautiful, colourful, hand-made hooked rugs - all created by local artisans.

The lady showed us around and even did a rug-hooking demonstration for us. A stretched piece of burlap was covering a wooden frame. The rug hook (a simple curved hook attached to a wooden handle) is threaded with a piece of wool, then pushed through the burlap with the right hand and through a small hole, to the underneath and then simply pulled back up again. This procedure, using many colours of wool, is repeated hundreds of times until the project is finished. She was working on a small rug "CAPE BRETON" when we were there.

I found it all so fascinating. Actually Cheticamp is famous for their rug-hooking artisans - "La Capitale de Tapis Hooke".

The Gift Shop also carries supplies of wool, small & large hooking frames, Hooking kits and also various other home-made crafts and souvenirs.
