Never mind what it is - it's worth going! Nov 09, 2010
Well, I'm feeling somewhat confused. Some (quite a lot of) years ago I went to Portland Bill with my son and was very taken with the long strip of pebbles joining the almost island of Portland to mainland Dorset near Abbotsbury. I meant to write it up here as just somewhere to go but I hit on technical controversy right out of my league.

The website I have given says it is a tombolo. Wiki says not - that it is actually a barrier beach that looks like a tombolo. I had never even heard of a tombolo so, if you are bothered, you had beter play with a search engine and make up your own mind!

Chesil Beach is 18 miles (28 kilometres) long and, on average, 160 metres wide and rises to 12 metres in height. The pebbles vary in size. At the Portland end they are somewhere between plums and tennis balls - at the other end much smaller. I'm sure geologists can have great fun with all this - to me it's just a fascinating place to see,
