A Rainy Day in Cherokee N.C Apr 19, 2008
Rain Why are you Raining On the NPPRT?

Cherokee, North Carolina is a town in Swain County. It is the headquarters for the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Old School stopped to take a break from the Mountain riding, which is wonderful, but it is physically challenging day after day then the rain came, & stayed. Rain & No Plan Plan Road Trip Motorcycle Travel do not go hand in hand. Located at the doorway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the southern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the site of a Harrahs Cherokee Casino, Old School made no contributions to the Harrahs retirement plan. It is located in western North Carolina on the Oconaluftee River and the Qualla Reservation, and on U.S. Highway 441. In recent years the Tribe has worked hard on a project to renovate the entire "tourist" area, has given notice to many shops that are considered in bad taste or fitting into the unwanted stereotype. As it was raining the only shopping Old School did was at the Shell Station Gift Shop I don’t think it was as bad as it used to be on previous visits. The Tribe has built many more cultural centers. Although many of the stereotypical representations of Native Americans still exist in the "tourist trap" stores, these will soon be gone, to be replaced by a more tasteful atmosphere of celebration of the native culture and peoples. The Tribe has plans to build new, state-of-the-art schools and health care facilities, and has taken an interest in preserving the pride of the people.

A basic understanding of Eastern Cherokee history, culture, and crafts can be had by attending a performance of Unto These Hills, visiting the Museum of the Cherokee Indian along with the Qualla Arts and Crafts center, where you can buy authentic Cherokee arts and crafts, and strolling through the Oconaluftee Indian Village, where you can see the crafts practiced as well as learning more about Cherokee history and society.

A long time ago I did paning for gold. Of course I didn't find anything but my friend did. We walked around I think it was some kind of park to see how the Cherokee indians lived. Very interesting.
