Blue Mansion Oct 23, 2010
The Blue Mansion is the common name for the nineteenth-century house of Cheong Fatt Tze, one of the most successful Asian businessmen of his day. The tour of the 27-bedroom mansion takes about an hour and costs RM12. I'm not sure the tour itself is worth RM12, but I'm happy to contribute that to the maintenance of this heritage site. The guide was entertaining but easily distracted (made coffee for himself twice, had a snack, and interrupted his talk a dozen times to call the house cats all during the period of an hour). The discussion on the geomancy or feng shui of the house was particularly interesting. The house has a nice collection of pictures and objects from the large Cheong family and their history is interesting (the guide talked quite a bit about his own family history--in case anyone was interested). Photography is allowed outside the house only, but several rooms in the mansion are open for overnight visitors or events.

Exquisite boutique hotel - Former merchant's own home Dec 29, 2009
The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion pub is not for everyone. Contained in a 19th century former residence of rich Chinese merchant and trader Cheong Fatt Tze, the hotel is about as an authentic a restoration as you will see anywhere. But the Holiday Inn, it ain't! Georgetown (named after 'mad' King George) is a treasure-trove for architecture and interior design freaks, having the largest number of existing buldings pre-dating World War II of any sizable city in the whole of Asia. Whereas most large Asian cities now resemble Chicago more than anything else, Georgetown's ambience is entirely and authentically Asian. But this 'hotel' is something else again. Think living-museum or movie-set, and you're getting close. It's also a major tourist attraction in town, and needs this income to repay the massive cost of it's restoration. Which was quite recent. But you wouldn't know that....as it looks flawless and timeless. Guests must agree to tidying-up to a prescribed standard each morning and vacate during daytime hours, because tourists will be traipsing through their quarters all day. Yep...you read that right! The building, especially interiors, was used extensively for shooting the French movie "Indochine", and instead of trying to describe it here, better go look at their website. Like I said, it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but if you're the 'type' and can afford a few nights here, well....the experience is just magical!

Postscript: There is a similar, even larger house in Medan (capital of North Sumartra, Indonesia) on Jalan Kesawan....that is equally impressive. Called Cheong Ah Fee Mansion, it belonged to the brother of the chap who had the Georgetown shack above, and is totally original and authentic. (Not open to visitors alas, but even a viewing of the exterior from the street will repay the effort for afficianados). If you're game like me, go round the back and call out to the caretakers lounging around in the garden.....they will almost certainly indulge you in exchange for a fistful of the local moo-lah. How do I know all this esoteric stuff? My wife is a native of Medan and her piano teacher in the 1960's was a grandson of Cheong Ah Fee and nephew of Cheong Fatt Tze. (Beat that!)
