Chemnitz Overview

Chemnitz is the third-largest city in Saxonia and has always been outrivaled by the neighbouring cities Dresden and Leipzig. Once the heart of an industrial area, Chemnitz was destroyed almost completely in World War II. After the war, it was rebuilt as a socialist model city which meant oversized roads and ugly communist blocks aplenty. When the wall came down, the city was big and had hardly any charm. Fortunately, this has changed completely. Chemnitz is home to a thriving economy, has renovated large parts of the city, is surprisingly green and definitely worth a visit. While many jobs in the industry were lost, the city preserves its industrial heritage in the superb Museum of Industry. Other claims to fame are the Museum Gunzenhauser, the Petrified Forest, the many art nouveau buildings and the lovely Ore Mountains just south of the city.
