Basic No Frills with Good Location May 25, 2011
Stayed there 2 nights in May, 2011. It was one of only a few hostels available for both nights due to the political situation preventing travellers from completing their trips to the Middle East.

Cheers Midtown is located a steep block uphill from the Tophane tram stop, which is very convenient. 2 - 3 steep blocks futher up the hill gets you to the main shopping pedestrian street of Taksim. It has clubs, outdoor cafes, restaurants, and upscale shops. The location is excellent. The street itself is a little dark at night, but there was enough pedestrian traffic early on. Walking with someone else later in the night should not be a problem, but make sure to read the most current blogs on the Taksim area before hand.

The room and hostel would have gotten an excellent on cleaniness, if it weren't for a number of ants in the room. There was plenty of hot water and the room was spacious. We had a private with a single and double bed and it's own bathroom. A couple of drawbacks were that the wireless internet did not work in the room during the stay and there was no breakfast offered, so you really didn't meet fellow travelers (although we only saw three others in 2 days). The common room was small, basically furnitured, had one TV and was closed off, because the window was always covered by a store front roll down metal cover. Not a space that invited you to stay awhile. More like an small apartment building than a hostel.

Assuming the hostel gets the ant problem under control (the person working said they had sprayed the day before), I would recommend it if the price is right and you're basically looking for a place to sleep. If you're into the scene in Taksim, and still want to move around the city, it's got the location and the easy access to transportation. If you like walking, you can even walk over the bridge to the historical area with the spice market.
